THE
KEY
Many people hesitate about history, because they usually begin by reading
from a book, a passive activity. Westville's workshop will key on your
students' natural sense of discovery. Within a loose framework of clues
about antebellum buildings, they will be challenged to "play detective".
For example, your group might be shown an old hand-forged nail, which
the students can compare with a modern machine-cut nail. Next, the Westville
blacksmith can guide them in actually forging a few nails of their own.
These nails and the guidance of the blacksmith thus gives them something
specific to discover and appreciate about old buildings as they search
through Westville.
FOLLOWING
UP
When you leave Westville, you will take with you a packet of information
on how to follow up your visit. This will include tips on relating the
trip to your own hometown. Best of all, this packet will help you develop
a reading and writing project to capitalize on your students' new interest.
Westville's educational department will be available to aid you with
your follow-up needs.
