Westville offers several hands-on workshops for school groups
that complement classroom instruction and meet Georgia, Alabama
and Florida performance standards.

Guided Tour

We offer a Regular Guided Tour for our schools and other children's groups. This Tour consists of three 20-minute tours by costumed tour guides who will introduce your group to the houses and other buildings that make up Historic Westville, some of the history of the families who lived and worked in them, and some of the activities that took place there.

Tour One: "History and Origin" - Begins near the Singer Gates
Tour Two: "Cotton and Slavery" - Begins at the Climax Church
Tour Three: "Business, Transportation and Farms" - Begins at the Blacksmith Shop

To receive this discount you MUST call and pre-register your group. 25% deposit is required at the time you place your reservation. Full payment is required 2 weeks prior to your visit. Failure to pre-pay results in cancellation of your reservation. If your group arrives without pre-payment, regular prices apply.

The Children of Westville

Our Children of Westville Tours are designed for 15 to 30 students. Your students see history through the eyes of a 19th century child by visiting their homes and other buildings they would visit on a regular basis, and by taking part in some of the activities they would have experienced each day.

We offer three different tours, concentrating on different cultures, socio-economic levels, and activities. Students may take part in 1, 2, or 3 tours during their visit. Each tour is approximately 1 hour.

Alice Singer Tour

(German Immigrant Girl)

Alice Singer was the actual daughter of Johan Singer, shoemaker and tannery owner. Alice’s story takes place in the Singer House, the girls’ academy-where she is a student, and at the boot shop where her father and brothers work. As the daughter of German immigrants, Alice’s story addresses the lives of immigrants, the role of women, her father’s trade, her brother’s apprenticeship and her school activities. Students learn how economic factors become an incentive for immigration and how activities in an 1850s southern town centered on the cotton industry. Tour focuses on the Singer House, the boot shop, and the academy with opportunities to try their hands-on interactive activities.

Elizabeth Tour

(Enslaved Girl)

Elizabeth, is based on a fictitious character, a 10-year-old slave who is owned by the Bryans. Elizabeth’s story is about the daily life of a young girl and her enslaved parents, who lives on the large Bryan Plantation. Tours focus on the cotton industry in Georgia: planting, harvesting, ginning and baling, transporting and selling. Students will understand the connection between the cotton industry, the removal of Native Americans and the expansion of slavery. Students visit the Bryan House, the slave cabin, the cotton gin, the baling press, and the cotton patch. Students will be offered hands-on activities to enrich their experience.

Jacob McCoy Tour

(Merchant Apprentice Boy)

Jacob, a fictitious character, is the son of the manager of the general store. Through Jacob’s story students learn about his daily life, the distribution of goods, how information is carried and dispersed in the 1850s, the nature of 1850s commerce, Indian Removal, and the nature of law and justice in the 1850s. Students visit his house, the general store and the courthouse where President Jimmy Carter’s great-grandfather had worked as hands-on activities during their tour may include chores at the house, sweeping out the general store and working the telegraph to spell out their name.

Our Pioneer Daily Life and Crafts program is a 2-station hands-on program designed for 10 - 30 students, and lasts approximately 2 hours.

Would you like your students to better understand daily life in the 1850’s? Westville’s 40 years of practicing 19th century crafts and activities is an excellent program to better comprehend our heritage and the details of daily life. Participants will work to sustain the family, by completing daily tasks. This program focuses on seasonal activities such as preparing and planting gardens, making candles, simple cooking, stacking and loading wood, stuffing mattresses, making lye soap, washing clothes and other domestic chores. Participants bake and eat biscuits and take home their hand-made candles.

In our Mock Trial: Guilty or Not Guilty program, students participate in a trial based on an actual mid-nineteenth century Stewart County court case of unpaid debt. The original case ultimately found its way to the Georgia Supreme Court.

This program requires pre-visit preparation. Students will roleplay as judge, lawyers, defendants, jurors and witnesses. Teachers are provided with a pre-visit packet containing roles, character descriptions and trial script. The script may be expanded to include 30 participants. Additional classrooms may participate as observers of the trial. Museum staff facilitates the program held in Westville’s historic Chattahoochee County courthouse. Students will leave with a better understanding of the American legal system.
